A Sweet Discovery in Space: Scientists Detect a New Sugar in the Cosmos

Astronomers have identified a new type of sugar, erythrulose, in interstellar space, providing fresh evidence that some of the essential chemical ingredients for life may have formed long before the Solar System existed. The discovery offers new insight into the origin of life on Earth and the chemistry of the Universe.

A Sweet Discovery in Space: Scientists Detect a New Sugar in the Cosmos
The findings were published in Nature Astronomy. An international team detected erythrulose in the interstellar medium—vast clouds of gas and dust between stars. Using two radio telescopes in Spain, researchers compared astronomical signals with laboratory spectra, confirming the molecule in its gaseous form.

On Earth, erythrulose is found in certain berries, including raspberries, and is also used in cosmetic products. Scientifically, however, it is significant because it can transform into molecules believed to play an important role in the early stages of biological chemistry, even though it is not itself essential for life.

Researchers describe erythrulose as one of the most complex sugars ever identified in space. Previous studies have already revealed other organic compounds in the Milky Way, including molecules related to genetic material and the building blocks of living cells. The new discovery adds another important piece to that puzzle.

According to the scientists, the presence of such compounds in interstellar clouds strengthens the hypothesis that many of life's fundamental building blocks existed before the formation of the Solar System and may have reached the young Earth through cosmic material.

The next phase of research will focus on searching for additional complex sugars and understanding how they form and transform in space. The authors believe that if these molecules exist in one region of the Galaxy, they are likely to be found elsewhere as well, increasing the possibility that the chemical ingredients necessary for life are widespread throughout the Universe.
