In spring 2026, the US military came close to intercepting a Chinese vessel in the Middle East after receiving false intelligence prepared with the help of artificial intelligence. CNN reported the incident, citing four sources familiar with the episode.

During the war with Iran, US military officials received a report claiming that a Chinese vessel was carrying components linked to a nuclear weapons programme. The information prompted preparations to intercept the ship. Armed personnel were preparing to board, while military aircraft were already in the air.

Only shortly before the operation was due to begin did officials conduct a deeper review of the underlying information. They found that the report had been prepared with the help of AI by an analyst at US Special Operations Command and that the chatbot used in the process had incorrectly identified the vessel’s cargo.

The system combined open-source information with classified intelligence and reached an erroneous conclusion. AI was then used to format the findings into a standard intelligence report, which was circulated within the military.

One source described the report as “entirely false” and said it “almost started a war.” The operation was called off after officials identified the error through additional checks.
