The United Kingdom has a new prime minister as Labour Party leader Andy Burnham officially took office after being invited by King Charles III to form a government. The transition took place without a general election, as Labour retained its parliamentary majority.
According to Buckingham Palace, King Charles III accepted the resignation of Keir Starmer and formally asked Andy Burnham to establish a new government. Burnham accepted the King's invitation and officially assumed office.
Starmer announced his intention to step down in June after Labour suffered significant losses in local elections and he acknowledged that he no longer enjoyed sufficient support within the parliamentary party. In his farewell address, he thanked the public for their trust, expressed confidence in Burnham's leadership, and pledged his full support.
