Andy Burnham One Step Away from Becoming UK Prime Minister

Andy Burnham has all but secured the Labour Party leadership and could become the United Kingdom’s new prime minister as early as July 20. On the first day of nominations, he won the backing of 322 of Labour’s 403 MPs, effectively leaving potential rivals with almost no path into the contest.
A candidate needs the support of 81 MPs to enter the leadership race. Burnham is just one additional nomination away from mathematically preventing any rival from reaching the required threshold. Several Labour MPs have already indicated their support but have yet to formally submit their nominations.
Burnham’s path to the leadership became even clearer after potential rival Al Carns decided not to stand. Nominations close on July 16, with the new Labour leader expected to be formally confirmed on July 17. The new prime minister is due to take office on July 20.
Burnham is seeking to succeed Keir Starmer, who resigned following Labour’s poor performance in the May local elections and mounting pressure from within the party.
