Egypt took control of the match with goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Ziko to establish a two-goal lead. However, Argentina responded in the closing stages as Cristian Romero reduced the deficit, Lionel Messi equalized, and Enzo Fernández scored the winning goal in stoppage time to seal a 3–2 victory.

Following the match, members of the Egyptian team criticized several refereeing decisions. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, meanwhile, praised his team's resilience in overturning the deficit and keeping its title defense alive.

In the day's other Round of 16 fixture, Switzerland and Colombia played out a goalless draw after 120 minutes. The Swiss prevailed 4–3 in the penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saving one spot kick to help secure victory.

Switzerland has now reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954. They will face Argentina in the next round as both teams continue their pursuit of the world title.
