Azerbaijan and Germany Elevate Bilateral Partnership to a Strategic Level

Azerbaijan and Germany have taken another significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations. During the official visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to elevating cooperation to a strategic level, with a particular focus on energy, economic ties, transport connectivity and regional stability.
As part of the visit, President Ilham Aliyev held one-on-one and expanded-format talks with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Villa Borsig residence. Before the meeting, the Azerbaijani leader signed the official guest book.
President Steinmeier welcomed the continued development of bilateral relations, describing Azerbaijan and Germany as "islands of stability" amid ongoing regional and global challenges. He also congratulated Azerbaijan on the progress made in advancing the peace agenda with Armenia and highlighted the country's important contribution to Europe's energy security.
President Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan is already supplying natural gas to Germany and Austria and reaffirmed Baku's readiness to further expand energy cooperation. The two leaders also discussed prospects for broader trade, investment and business cooperation, the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor, and the current situation in the Middle East.
During the visit, President Aliyev also held talks with German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, first in a one-on-one format and later together with their delegations.
Following the negotiations, Ilham Aliyev and Friedrich Merz signed the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Germany, formally establishing the strategic nature of bilateral relations. The sides also signed a Joint Declaration on the Establishment and Operation of the Azerbaijan-Germany Business Council, aimed at expanding economic cooperation and strengthening business ties between the two countries.
