Bezos-Backed Consortium Acquires 30% Stake in Liverpool
Business
Amazon founder and U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos has joined 1892 Holdings, the consortium acquiring around a 30% stake in English football club Liverpool. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) will remain the club’s controlling owner following the transaction.
The deal is valued at £1.65 billion, putting Liverpool’s overall valuation at approximately £5.5 billion. The consortium is led by businessman Amit Bhatia and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and other investors.
Bezos is participating through investment structure K5 Sports. He will not join Liverpool’s expanded board and will not be involved in the club’s day-to-day management. FSG will retain operational control.
FSG acquired Liverpool for around £300 million in 2010. The sale of the minority stake does not change the club’s controlling ownership. The transaction remains subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
