They may belong to a new species.
Palaeontologists have found in China fossils of a dinosaur up to 90 million years old, which may belong to a new species. This is reported by the agency Xinhua.
The find, dating back to the Cretaceous period, was made at a construction site in the city of Ganzhou back in 2021. In the course of research, scientists determined that the fossils belong to a new species of titanosaur and named it Gandititan cavocaudatus. It is noted that a total of about 40% of the bones from its skeleton were found.
Thanks to the well-preserved vertebral column, the scientists made an assumption that the total body length of the dinosaur is about 14 metres.
The scientists said the discovery is of great importance for studying the evolution and distribution of the species during the Cretaceous period.
