Elon Musk to Return to Trump Administration to Work on Future Weapons Project
World
American billionaire Elon Musk is returning to work with the Donald Trump administration. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Musk will co-lead the Pentagon’s new Project Meridian, an initiative focused on studying the future of warfare and the technologies needed for it.
Project Meridian is a 120-day effort. Its task is to determine which areas of U.S. military development should be prioritized, what capabilities need to be mastered and what weapons and technologies American forces will require on future battlefields.
Hegseth unveiled the initiative on September 30 during an address at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Alongside Musk, the project will be co-led by Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael will oversee the initiative on behalf of the department.
According to Hegseth, the purpose of Meridian is to “creatively look to the future” and identify the domains the United States must master and the capabilities its military needs to develop. The team is expected to submit its findings within 120 days.
For Musk, the appointment marks a return to an official working relationship with the Trump administration following a public dispute with the president. Musk previously spent several months leading the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, before leaving the administration. Their relationship later improved, and Musk resumed appearances at the White House in 2026.
The new project will draw on specialists from the technology, academic and policy sectors. The Pentagon expects the group to identify emerging military capabilities and propose solutions for developing, testing and deploying them.
Musk will therefore once again take on an official advisory role connected to the U.S. administration, this time through a Pentagon initiative focused on the long-term development of military technologies.
