Family of Five-Year-Old Namangan Victim to Be Relocated and Provided Housing

Uzbekistan’s National Agency for Social Protection will provide comprehensive assistance to the family of a five-year-old girl who was subjected to sexual violence in Namangan region. The family will be relocated to another city, where it will receive housing, rehabilitation and social support.
Shahnoza Mirziyoyeva, First Deputy Director of the agency, said specialists and psychologists have been working with the girl and her mother since the first days. The mother will receive assistance with education and employment, while the family may also be helped to change its surname if necessary.
“The girl and her loved ones should be able to start a new life in safety,” Mirziyoyeva said. According to her, the case is under the special supervision of the Presidential Administration, with all relevant agencies involved in supporting the family.
Earlier, Presidential Administration Head Saida Mirziyoyeva called for the toughest possible penalties for crimes against children. She said proposals were being prepared to amend legislation and stressed that responsibility should extend beyond the direct perpetrator to officials whose negligence contributed to the failure to protect the child.
According to local media reports, a criminal case has been opened over the incident, the suspect has been detained and the investigation is ongoing. The girl and her mother are receiving psychological, medical and legal assistance.
