FIFA to Consider Return of Russian Teams to International Tournaments

FIFA may review its ban on Russian teams competing in international tournaments following the International Olympic Committee’s decision to temporarily restore the status of the Russian Olympic Committee.
FIFA told Sky News that it would analyse the IOC decision before determining its next steps in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously called for the possible return of Russian teams to be considered. He argued that the current ban had failed to achieve its intended goals and had only increased frustration and tensions.
A first step towards easing restrictions has already been taken, with Russia’s under-15 national team allowed to participate in the youth World Cup scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan in October.
Russian teams have been suspended from international football competitions since 2022. The IOC’s new position could now provide grounds for FIFA to reconsider its own restrictions.
