Finnish border guards are preparing to remove some of the barriers at checkpoints on the eastern border. At the same time, the Finnish authorities do not rule out that the border will have to be closed again if the flow of migrants resumes.
Finland is preparing to open checkpoints on the border with Russia. The barriers will be partially removed on 14 December. This is reported by DW.
According to the representative of the Border Guard Service of South-Eastern Finland Heikki Ahtiainen, part of the fences will remain in place, as Finland does not exclude the re-closure of checkpoints.
"We have to see if this (large influx of migrants from third countries. - Ed.) will continue if the borders are opened," Ahtiainen pointed out.
He said that the Finnish Border Guard is ready to extend restrictions on the eastern border if there is a new influx of asylum seekers.
