From Trade to Energy: Armenia and Azerbaijan Explore New Economic Links

Armenia expects to begin exporting goods to Azerbaijan in the near future, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said. As bilateral trade resumes, the two countries are also exploring broader economic and energy cooperation.
“The issue of mutual trade is on the agenda. In the near future, export supplies from Armenia to Azerbaijan will be carried out,” Pashinyan told journalists. His remarks were reported by regional media on August 13.
Trade ties between the two countries have already begun to recover. In February 2026, Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev noted the launch of bilateral trade, continued Azerbaijani oil product exports to Armenia, and the transit of grain and other goods from third countries through Azerbaijan. The two sides agreed to continue exploring ways to expand economic and trade cooperation.
Energy cooperation is also emerging as part of the broader economic agenda. Armenian authorities have emphasized the need to diversify natural gas supply sources and routes, with imports from Azerbaijan mentioned as one potential option. However, the materials reviewed do not indicate that Azerbaijan has made an official decision to begin gas exports to Armenia.
Regional infrastructure could play a role in future economic links. The Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) is being developed as an infrastructure project aimed at creating new transport and economic connections through Armenian territory. The Armenian section is estimated at approximately 42–43 kilometres.
The expansion of trade and transport connectivity is therefore becoming one of the practical components of the normalization process between Yerevan and Baku. Prospects for broader energy cooperation remain subject to further negotiations.
