Uzbekistan’s Kashkadarya region plans to expand mountain tourism, ethnic tourism and sports activities. In parallel, tourism projects worth a combined $50 million are planned across six villages.

According to information presented by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at a meeting on regional development, Kashkadarya has received 2.5 million tourists since the beginning of the year. Around 500,000 of them visited Gelon. The region’s tourism potential could support an annual visitor flow of up to six million people.

Mountain tourism will be one of the main priorities. In cooperation with Tatarstan, the first phase of the ski resort in Gelon is expected to become operational next year. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to develop modern tourism infrastructure in the region’s mountainous areas.

Authorities also plan to promote ethnic tourism in Taragay village in Chirakchi district, Bashir in Kitab district, and Tatar in Yakkabog district. Their natural landscapes are similar to those of Gelon, creating opportunities to develop tourist routes and introduce visitors to local traditions.

In Sayyod and Suvtushar villages in Shahrisabz district, mountain rivers are expected to provide a basis for rafting and other forms of sports tourism.

The responsible authorities have been instructed to prepare master plans for all six villages within one month. Implementation of the projects, with a combined value of $50 million, is scheduled to begin on 1 March.

The region will also host gastronomic festivals. The “Lola va Kabob” (“Tulips and Kebab”) festival will take place every spring in Guzar district, while Kukdala district will host the “Chiyal Yakhna” festival.

Together, the initiatives are intended to broaden Kashkadarya’s tourism offering, covering everything from skiing and rafting to cultural heritage and regional cuisine.
