Gerhard Schröder Joins Supervisory Board of Hyperglobus in Russia

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has joined the supervisory board of Hyperglobus LLC, which operates the Globus hypermarket chain in Russia. The company said he will participate in overall management and support the strategic development of the business in the Russian market.
The appointment followed a general meeting of Hyperglobus participants. Thomas Bruch, owner of Hyperglobus and a shareholder of Globus Holding GmbH & Co, said the decision was driven by the need for additional expert support. According to Bruch, Schröder’s long-standing experience in Russia’s political, economic and cultural life will help the company maintain a “dialogue-oriented approach” and seek constructive solutions under current conditions.
In January 2025, Hyperglobus was fully separated from German Globus Holding and has since operated independently in Russia in legal and organizational terms. At the end of 2025, the chain operated 22 hypermarkets across eight regions of Russia’s Central Federal District.
Schröder’s appointment comes amid changes in the structure of foreign retailers’ operations in Russia. In September 2026, the Russian assets of several foreign companies, including Auchan, Lemana PRO and Metro, were placed under temporary management by Russian entities.
Schröder has maintained contacts with Russia’s leadership in recent years. In July 2022, he travelled to Moscow and met with Vladimir Putin, later publicly discussing the possibility of negotiations over Ukraine. Western media have also repeatedly described the former chancellor as a politician who has maintained close ties with the Russian president.
Schröder’s current role at Hyperglobus is focused on participation in the company’s overall management and strategic planning in Russia. The retailer has previously emphasized the independence of its Russian business following its separation from German Globus Holding.
