Hormuz Attacks Put Fragile US-Iran Understanding at Risk

New attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz risk triggering another escalation between the United States and Iran and threatening the fragile understandings reached between the two sides.
According to Axios, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at least two missiles at commercial ships transiting the strategic waterway. US officials cited by the outlet said both vessels sustained significant damage, but no casualties were reported.
Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported an attack on a tanker off the coast of Oman. An unidentified projectile struck the vessel’s port side and caused a fire. No casualties or environmental damage were reported.
According to The Wall Street Journal, one of the vessels targeted may have been the Al Rekayyat LNG carrier, owned by Qatar’s Nakilat. The strike reportedly hit near the vessel’s engine room.
Axios said the incident could prompt a US response and jeopardise the fragile understanding between Washington and Tehran. No official decision on US retaliatory strikes has yet been announced.
