Huawei Faces New York Trial Over Alleged Theft of Competitors’ Technologies

Chinese technology company Huawei is facing a criminal trial in New York following a lengthy investigation. US prosecutors accuse the company of systematically obtaining competitors’ technologies and trade secrets, while Huawei denies the allegations.
According to BILD, one of the key episodes in the case involves T-Mobile’s Tappy testing robot. Prosecutors allege that Huawei employees secretly photographed the device and took measurements of it.
In 2013, one Huawei employee allegedly placed part of Tappy’s robotic arm in a laptop bag and removed it from the laboratory. According to the allegations, before returning the component, he provided Huawei engineers with photographs and measurement data.
Another episode concerns a technology exhibition. After the exhibition had closed, a Huawei employee was allegedly caught photographing the internal components of a device displayed at a competitor’s booth. In another case, a US company provided him with confidential technology for testing without knowing of his connection to Huawei. The test results were allegedly passed on to the Chinese company.
US prosecutors also allege that Huawei rewarded employees for obtaining information about competitors. According to the allegations, confidential data was sent in encrypted form to a dedicated email address. Employees could reportedly receive monthly bonuses for particularly valuable information about competitors.
Huawei denies the allegations and says the US government’s position is false.
If convicted, the company could face substantial financial penalties. The United States could also confiscate its assets. The exact amount of potential sanctions has not yet been determined. Jury selection has begun in New York.
