India and Uzbekistan Move Mining Cooperation Toward Implementation

India expects to make significant progress in mining cooperation with Uzbekistan in the coming months, with discussions focusing on commercial projects, critical minerals, geological exploration, mineral processing and the participation of Indian companies in developing prospective deposits.
During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Uzbekistan, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding between India’s Ministry of Mines and Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology covering cooperation in geology and mineral resources.
Sibi George, Secretary (West) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said the two sides were discussing specific commercial projects and exchanges of delegations to accelerate implementation of the agreement. He noted strong interest from Indian businesses and said the institutional groundwork for expanding cooperation had already been established.
The joint statement issued after talks between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Prime Minister Narendra Modi provides for exploring joint projects in geology, mining, mineral processing and the production of higher value-added goods. The two countries also agreed to expand cooperation on critical and strategic minerals and encourage Indian companies to participate in developing prospective mineral deposits in Uzbekistan.
Uranium remains a separate area of cooperation. India and Uzbekistan are negotiating a new long-term uranium supply agreement, with the Indian side reporting progress toward finalising the document.
Beyond resource cooperation, India announced a US$1 million contribution for greening and ecological rehabilitation efforts in the Aral Sea region. The initiative builds on Uzbekistan’s Yashil Makon programme and India’s Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign and will be implemented under India’s Grant-in-Aid framework.
