India Successfully Launches EOS-05 Satellite for Continuous Earth Monitoring

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched the EOS-05 (GISAT-1A) remote-sensing satellite. The GSLV F-17 launch vehicle lifted off from the spaceport on Sriharikota Island, carrying the satellite weighing more than 2.3 tonnes into its planned geotransfer orbit.

The spacecraft separated from the rocket 18 minutes after launch. It will later be transferred to a geosynchronous orbit at an altitude of around 36,000 kilometers through a series of maneuvers, where its orbital period will be synchronized with Earth’s rotation.

Unlike many remote-sensing satellites operating in low Earth orbit, EOS-05 will be able to remain over the same region. This will allow it to provide real-time Earth imagery and conduct continuous monitoring.

The satellite’s data will be used to monitor weather conditions, natural disasters and agricultural land across India. ISRO has described the new spacecraft as an “all-seeing eye.”

According to ISRO chief Vanniyaperumal Narayanan, data received after the launch indicates that all systems are operating normally. The satellite’s solar panel was also successfully deployed. ISRO said the flight was proceeding along its designated trajectory.

With a mass of more than 2.3 tonnes, EOS-05 is the heaviest spacecraft ever placed into orbit by a GSLV rocket.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the successful mission demonstrated the high level of expertise and innovation of the country’s space sector and its growing capabilities. He said the launch would contribute to the further development of India’s space ecosystem.
