North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has urged company commanders of the Korean People’s Army to intensify training and ensure their units are fully prepared for a possible war. The Korean Central News Agency reported the remarks following the Third Meeting of Company Leaders.
Kim said commanders’ primary task was to maintain a high level of combat readiness through sustained, intensive training. He also called for strengthening service members’ patriotic spirit and ideological commitment, while highlighting the role of company commanders in building up the armed forces.
According to Kim, military capability depends not only on modern weapons and equipment but also on personnel training and the cohesion and resilience of units. Commanders should achieve tangible results in training and turn their companies into effective combat formations, the North Korean state news agency reported.
The meeting was attended by National Defence Minister Kim Song Gi, Korean People’s Army Chief of the General Staff Ri Yong Gil and other senior military officials. After the meeting, Kim Jong Un posed for a photograph with the participants.
The statement came as Pyongyang continued its military activities. Shortly beforehand, North Korea reported test-launching two types of strategic cruise missiles from a submarine in the Sea of Japan. The information was carried by North Korean state media.
International attention has also focused on the country’s nuclear programme. The International Atomic Energy Agency previously reported construction of a new uranium-enrichment facility at the Yongbyon nuclear complex in North Korea. According to the reported information, the facility is designed to accommodate up to 28 cascades of gas centrifuges.
Kim’s call underscores the priority Pyongyang continues to place on strengthening the military, improving personnel training and ensuring that units are ready to carry out combat missions. The report gave no further details on a timetable.
