Lavrov Reaffirms Support for Iran After Trump’s Remarks on Russia’s Role

Russia will continue to support Iran and has no plans to scale back economic cooperation with Tehran. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the statement during a visit to the Iranian capital, hours after US President Donald Trump published remarks on Russia’s role in assisting Iran. Trump wrote that Russia was doing “very little, if anything” to help the Islamic Republic and said he wanted the situation to remain unchanged.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Lavrov described Iran’s cause as “just”, drawing a comparison with Russia’s own position. He also accused Washington and Israel of launching what he called an unprovoked military campaign against Iran.

Lavrov said Moscow remained ready to help find a diplomatic settlement to the conflict involving Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other. According to the Russian minister, Moscow had reaffirmed its willingness to help identify mutually acceptable solutions. He welcomed Tehran’s stated readiness to continue diplomatic efforts and called for a return to the conditions that existed before the conflict in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. These included restoring freedom of navigation and providing guarantees against renewed hostilities.

Lavrov also said Russia had worked at the United Nations to prevent attempts to justify US and Israeli strikes on Iran. He said Moscow was providing humanitarian assistance, including medical supplies and regular food shipments. Russia, he added, would not abandon the implementation of economic and investment agreements with Iran.

In his Truth Social post, Trump explained his reluctance to impose further sanctions on Moscow by saying he did not want to jeopardise negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. He said he wanted to avoid doing anything that could “foolishly” push Russia away from the negotiating table.

The US president also criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, blaming Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries for damaging the global diesel market. Trump also praised Russia’s readiness to supply diesel to international markets at comparatively low prices.

Washington had previously stepped back from introducing a new package of sanctions against Russia and eased restrictions on Russian diesel supplies. The White House has defended the approach as part of efforts to preserve peace negotiations and reduce pressure on global fuel markets.
