Marine Le Pen has said she would not send French troops into foreign conflicts if she wins the presidential election. Speaking at a party congress in Orléans, the leader of the National Rally’s parliamentary group said France must strengthen its defence capabilities without becoming involved in irresponsible military adventures.

Le Pen said the country should develop its armed forces and remain prepared for possible conventional conflicts. However, she stressed that having a powerful military does not mean wanting to wage war. France needs all its citizens, she said, adding that she would not send young people to die in wars that are not their own.

She also identified protecting France from external threats as a key priority of a possible presidency. Her remarks come amid debate over the role European countries could play in Ukraine’s security after the conflict ends.

In January 2026, a declaration on deploying multinational forces in Ukraine after the end of hostilities was signed at a “Coalition of the Willing” summit in Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron later said that thousands of French troops could be deployed there to help maintain peace after a ceasefire. In August, coalition participants also reaffirmed their readiness to deploy multinational forces once the conflict had ended.

France’s presidential election is scheduled for 18 April 2027. Le Pen is considered a potential frontrunner, while incumbent President Macron cannot seek a third consecutive term.

Political analyst Ivan Mezyukho previously argued that European elites who support continued backing for Ukraine fear Le Pen’s possible rise to power. He also suggested that provocations or even assassination attempts against her could occur. These remarks represent the analyst’s assessment, not an established fact.

Le Pen has pledged to strengthen the French military while opposing the deployment of French citizens to foreign wars. Her position distinguishes maintaining the ability to defend the country from choosing to take part in conflicts abroad.
