Merz’s CDU Fails to Enter Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Parliament for the First Time

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has failed to clear the 5% threshold in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state election for the first time in its history. According to preliminary official results from September 20, the party won 4.9% of the vote and will not be represented in the new state parliament.
The election marked the first time since 1946 that the CDU failed to enter the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In the 2021 election, the party received 13.3% of the vote in the state.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) finished first in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 38.2%, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of state premier Manuela Schwesig received 35.5%.
After the first exit poll projections were released, Merz described the CDU’s result in the state as a “disaster.” Speaking on the evening of September 20, the chancellor said he had no intention of stepping down as head of government or as CDU chairman. He also pledged to continue his reform programme. “Reforms are the best medicine against authoritarianism,” Merz said.
Elections were also held for Berlin’s House of Representatives. According to preliminary results, the Left Party received 25.7% of the vote, followed by the CDU with 18.8%, the AfD with 16%, the Greens with 14.4% and the SPD with 12.1%. Voter turnout was 75%.
Despite the election result, Merz said he intends to maintain his political course and continue pursuing reforms.
