Mirvokhid Azimov Appointed Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States
Before his appointment, Azimov served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan. Earlier, he held the position of Deputy Secretary General of the OTS. He therefore has prior experience working within the structure of the organization that brings together Turkic states.

Azimov was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister by a presidential decree on May 26, 2026. He will now lead the OTS Secretariat, which provides organizational support for the organization’s activities and coordinates the implementation of decisions adopted by its member states.

The appointment took place during the OTS’s 13th summit in Ankara. The meeting focused on further developing multilateral cooperation among the organization’s member states. Key areas of cooperation include political dialogue, trade and economic relations, investment, transport and logistics, culture, education, tourism, and environmental protection.

The OTS brings together Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, and Uzbekistan. The organization provides a platform for strengthening ties among its members on the basis of shared history, linguistic connections, and cultural heritage. Summit decisions establish priorities for joint efforts, while the Secretariat supports their practical implementation.

Azimov’s appointment marks a significant personnel development for Uzbekistan and the organization. For the first time, a representative of Uzbekistan has become OTS Secretary General. He succeeds Kyrgyz diplomat Kubanychbek Omuraliev. The new Secretary General is expected to continue the work of the Secretariat and support the implementation of initiatives agreed upon by member states. The decision was made by the Council of Heads of State at the Ankara summit.
