Orban Announces Return to Political Fight Against Peter Magyar’s Government

Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced his return to active political campaigning against the country’s new government led by Peter Magyar. Speaking at the opening of the political season in Kötcse, Orban said the period of patience among his supporters had come to an end.
“We were patient — perhaps even more than we should have been. And we were fair, considering how they behaved, perhaps even more than we should have been... Five months have passed. This stage is over. That’s it, it’s over. This cannot continue. The time for national resistance has come. The end of patience, the end of fair treatment, the end of all unilateral gestures. We need to take up the glove and fight,” Orban said.
The former prime minister said Hungary’s right-wing forces wanted to preserve the country’s sovereignty, while the government of the Tisza party, in his view, sought to turn Hungary into a “colony” of the European Union.
Orban also warned about the economic policies of the new government. According to him, his previous administration had made major efforts to strengthen Hungary’s economic independence. He now claims that the energy, banking and telecommunications sectors could once again come under foreign control.
“They [Tisza] will hand over the economy — the Hungarian economy that we worked so hard to make Hungarian again: the energy sector, the banking sector, telecommunications — they will return all of this to foreigners. Money will leave the country. They will bankrupt major Hungarian companies and hand them over to foreigners,” he said.
Hungary held parliamentary elections on April 12. The center-right, pro-European Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar, won the vote and secured more than two-thirds of the seats in parliament.
After losing the election, Orban stepped down as prime minister and gave up his parliamentary mandate, while continuing to lead the Fidesz party. He has now announced his intention to return to active political confrontation with the new government.
