A scandal has erupted at the 2026 Olympics in Italy over the quality of medals: athletes report that ribbons are detaching, and parts of medals break when dropped, overshadowing their victories.
Several Olympic participants have complained about the substandard medals. American skier Breezy Johnson, Swedish skier Ebba Andersson, and German biathlete Justus Strelow reported that their medal ribbons detached or parts of the medals broke when dropped.
Andrea Franchizi, Chief Operating Officer of the Olympic organizing committee, confirmed that the organizers are aware of the problem and are investigating the cause of the defects. He emphasized that award ceremonies are extremely important for athletes as they are among the most memorable moments of the Games.
The medals were produced by the State Printing and Coin Institute of Italy. Organizers promise to take measures to address the issue.
