President Mirziyoyev Congratulates Uzbekistan’s Team on Its Second Chess Olympiad Victory

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with members of Uzbekistan’s national chess and para-chess teams and their families. He congratulated the athletes on their historic victory at the 46th World Chess Olympiad and highlighted the contribution of every team member to the overall result.
The President noted that nearly 2,000 chess players from more than 200 countries, including leading grandmasters and reigning champions, gathered in Samarkand. He said raising the Uzbek flag to the highest position amid such strong competition was an example of courage, intelligence and determination. More than 60,000 visitors came to Samarkand to watch the Olympiad, while about 500,000 fans followed the games in fan zones across the country and millions more watched on television and online.
Mirziyoyev paid particular attention to the match against defending Olympic champions India. He recalled Nodirbek Yakubboev’s game against Nihal Sarin, noting that despite a difficult situation, the Uzbek player fought to the end and used tactical ideas that changed the course of the game and secured a decisive team victory. Uzbekistan then defeated China 3–1 and beat the United States, the world’s top-ranked team and six-time Olympic champions.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov completed the tournament unbeaten and won gold on the first board. The President also highlighted his victory over Fabiano Caruana in a difficult endgame. Addressing Javokhir Sindarov, Mirziyoyev wished him success in his upcoming battle for the world title, saying that his teammates, coaches and the people of Uzbekistan were behind him.
Mukhiddin Madaminov delivered a crucial point by defeating Ukraine’s Roman Dekhtiarov with the black pieces on the decisive day. Shamsiddin Vokhidov also contributed to the team’s success, playing on equal terms against reigning world champion Gukesh. “This gold medal contains the hard work and enormous contribution of every member of the team,” the President said.
The Head of State also highlighted the achievements of Uzbekistan’s other teams. The second men’s team defeated the Netherlands, ranked sixth in the world, by a large margin. Seventeen-year-old Asrorjon Omonov, playing for the third team, won seven of eight games. Mirziyoyev said Uzbekistan has an entire generation of strong chess players capable of achieving further international success.
The women’s first team won seven of 11 rounds. The President praised Afruza Khamdamova, Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova, Umida Omonova, Nilufar Imamkhoziyeva, Guldona Karimova and other members of the team, expressing confidence that Uzbek women chess players would eventually reach the top step of the Olympic podium.
At the third FIDE Para Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan’s team won its first-ever bronze medal. Selbi Kakishova scored six points in seven games and won silver on her board. Abdulaziz Bakhodirov took individual bronze, while Ahadkhon Kimsanbayev remained unbeaten.
