According to Putin, CIS countries could achieve even greater results by reducing restrictions on mutual trade. Economic cooperation remains one of the Commonwealth’s priorities, alongside investment and high technology. Trade rose a further 19% in the first half of 2026, while more than 90% of mutual settlements were conducted in national currencies. Cooperation also spans science, education, tourism, healthcare, environmental protection, sport and youth policy.

Putin also addressed the international agenda. He said CIS countries support a fair multipolar world order based on international law and the central role of the United Nations.

The Russian president highlighted the importance of preserving shared history among CIS countries. Leaders are expected to adopt a resolution on safeguarding historical memory. Putin said young people should know about the achievements of peoples during the Soviet period and the contributions of previous generations. He also described the Russian language as a unifying force across the CIS.

During the meeting, Putin confirmed that Uzbekistan would assume the CIS chairmanship on January 1, 2027. He said Tashkent could count on Russia’s support during its term.

Putin also invited his counterparts to the traditional informal pre-New Year meeting in St. Petersburg on December 21. He said the gathering would provide an opportunity to discuss current issues and future areas of cooperation among CIS countries.
