Spain and Belgium have advanced to the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Portugal and the United States in the round of 16.
Spain edged Portugal 1–0 in a tense encounter decided by Mikel Merino’s winning goal in the 91st minute. The victory sent Spain into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2010, when they went on to win the tournament.
The match marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s final appearance at a FIFA World Cup.
In the other round-of-16 clash, Belgium defeated tournament co-hosts the United States 4–1. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku also found the net. Malik Tillman scored the USA’s only goal.
Folarin Balogun started for the United States after FIFA’s disciplinary bodies suspended the automatic ban resulting from his red card in the previous match.
