Rubio and Salam Discuss Strengthening US-Lebanon Partnership

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on September 28. The sides discussed developments in Lebanon and the region, efforts to restore the country’s full sovereignty, and the further development of bilateral partnership.
Salam said Lebanon is looking to a renewed partnership with the United States that would support the reconstruction of the state and strengthen its legitimate institutions. He said a key priority is to move toward the practical implementation of the trilateral framework and translate its principles into concrete steps.
The Lebanese prime minister called for a clear timetable for the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, the extension of state authority across the country, and the confinement of weapons exclusively to legitimate state authorities. He also stressed the need for a reliable mechanism to monitor implementation of the commitments set out in the trilateral agreements.
According to Salam, the framework should address more than security issues. It should also support the Lebanese government’s efforts to provide assistance, carry out recovery and reconstruction, and create conditions for the return of displaced people.
The prime minister also stressed the importance of continued US support for the Lebanese army and strengthening its capabilities. He linked stronger state institutions and their expanded authority to the process of restoring Lebanon’s full sovereignty.
Rubio, for his part, reaffirmed the US commitment to supporting Lebanon and its state institutions, as well as continuing assistance to the Lebanese army. He also stressed the importance of implementing the trilateral framework to promote stability and security.
