The second Russian art festival “World of Arts” opened in Tashkent on October 1. The programme began with the exhibition “More Than Life” featuring works by artist and sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, followed by the “Opera Masterpieces” gala concert at the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theatre.

The Gallery of Fine Arts of Uzbekistan is displaying Tsereteli’s paintings, sculptures and enamel works. The exhibition has particular significance for the organisers: during his lifetime, the artist dreamed of presenting his work in Tashkent but was unable to fulfil that ambition.

“Zurab Tsereteli had a dream to present his works here, in Tashkent, in Uzbekistan. Unfortunately, he was unable to realise it during his lifetime. And so we, his followers, his students, academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts, have come here,” said Tatyana Shumova, president of the Centre for Film Festivals and International Programmes.

The festival’s musical opening featured the “Opera Masterpieces” gala concert. Performers included Bolshoi Theatre soloists Alexander Chernov and Guzel Sharipova, Helikon Opera artists Valentina Pravdina and Konstantin Brzhinsky, and Olga Zhigmitova, a soloist of the Buryat State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. They were accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan conducted by Alibek Kabdurakhmanov.

For several performers, it was their first visit to Tashkent. Konstantin Brzhinsky highlighted the city and the theatre hall, as well as his work with the Uzbek orchestra: “Complete mutual understanding, as if we had been working together all our lives. Music really brings all of us together.”

Olga Zhigmitova described the festival as an important cultural project: “I believe such projects make the world brighter. They unite hearts.” Alexander Chernov, who was also visiting Tashkent for the first time, said: “I am simply full of emotions and impressions from all the beauty surrounding us.”

The concert featured works by French, Italian and Russian composers. According to the performers, music became the common language of the evening.

The festival also includes educational projects. Lectures by Russian specialists and academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts were held at the Centre for Contemporary Art, while experts from the Moscow Museum of Modern Art met with students from Tashkent universities. An open master class by teachers from the Vaganova Academy is also planned.

On October 2, the festival will continue with a Cinema Day dedicated to the 90th anniversary of filmmaker Stanislav Govorukhin. The national ensemble “Dances of the Republic of Khakassia” will perform on October 3. The festival will conclude on October 4 with a concert by students of the Vaganova Academy in St Petersburg, presented by academy rector Nikolai Tsiskaridze.

According to the organisers, “World of Arts” aims not only to showcase Russian art but also to strengthen cultural ties between Russia and Uzbekistan.
