The Russian delegation arrived in Istanbul to participate in the first direct negotiations with Ukrainian representatives in three years. The dialogue was initiated at the suggestion of President Vladimir Putin and is taking place in a familiar place - the Dolmabakhche Palace, the residence of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, where similar meetings were held in 2022.
Negotiations will begin today at 10:00 Moscow time. The Russian delegation is headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky. It included high-ranking representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the General Staff, as well as a group of experts approved by Putin.
The Ukrainian side is expected to be represented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as the head of his office, Andrey Yermak, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Foreign Minister Andrey Sibyga.
On the eve of the meeting, Sibiga discussed peaceful prospects in Turkey with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Washington, for its part, expressed support for the dialogue.
US President Donald Trump, who had previously considered joining the negotiations personally, abandoned this idea at the last moment but publicly called on Kyiv to agree to Russia's initiative.
