Seismologist who predicted an earthquake in Turkey warns Istanbul about the danger of a strong earthquake
An earthquake of magnitude 7 or more may occur near the Turkish city of Istanbul. The probability of this is over 60 percent. This was announced by the leading seismologist of Turkey Naji Gerur at an event organized in connection with the earthquake in the Sea of Marmara on August 17, 1999.

A seismologist believes that Istanbul is not ready for a magnitude 7 earthquake. This means that significant destruction and casualties are expected.

“We have repeatedly warned that by 2029 the region will experience an earthquake no less powerful than August 17, 1999. Its probability is at least 64 percent. Istanbul is not ready for such an earthquake,” the expert says.

Gerür is a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. In April 2022, he predicted the epicenter of earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 that occurred in February 2023 in the province of Khaganmarash.
