Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s State Visit to Korea Strengthens Strategic Partnership

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s state visit to the Republic of Korea marked an important stage in the development of bilateral relations. High-level talks, meetings with the country’s leadership and Korean business representatives opened new opportunities for expanding investment, technology and trade and economic cooperation.
The central event was a meeting with President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung. The two sides confirmed their readiness to take their special strategic partnership to a new level. Trade, investment, critical minerals, transport, infrastructure and advanced technologies were identified among the key areas of cooperation.
Cooperation was also discussed during meetings with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik. The agenda included trade and economic ties, investment, technology, transport and logistics, as well as innovation, the digital economy, cybersecurity, critical-mineral processing and interregional cooperation.
Meetings with major Korean companies and financial institutions formed another important part of the visit. More than 300 representatives of government bodies and business communities from the two countries took part in the Uzbekistan-Korea Business Forum.
Following the visit, a portfolio of prospective investment projects worth around $12 billion was prepared. A new $8 billion strategic partnership programme with the Export-Import Bank of Korea was also signed. Its priorities include high-speed trains, the establishment of a Bio-Center, critical-mineral processing and digital technology development.
The two sides also adopted a package of bilateral documents covering transport, aviation, agriculture, tourism, artificial intelligence, education, healthcare, environmental protection, climate change and intellectual property.
On 16 September, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in the first Central Asia–Republic of Korea Summit. The visit therefore combined the bilateral and regional agendas, establishing new areas for long-term cooperation between Uzbekistan, Korea and the wider Central Asian region.
