Today, December 27, 192 out of 300 members of the National Assembly (parliament) voted in favor of impeachment. Members of the ruling party abstained from voting.
Acting President Han Duck-soo rejected the opposition’s demand to appoint three judges to fill vacant positions in the Constitutional Court. These judges were expected to review the impeachment of the incumbent president, Yoon Suk-yeol. Consequently, Han Duck-soo has also been impeached.
In accordance with the Constitution, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, Choi Sang-mo, will now serve as Acting President.
For context, on December 14 this year, President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached for attempting to impose martial law in the country.
