Sweden Does Not See Russia-NATO War as a Realistic Scenario

Swedish authorities see no signs that Russia is preparing for a direct military confrontation with NATO, although they are recording a rise in hybrid threats. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson made the remarks in an interview with Bloomberg on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.
According to Kristersson, Moscow understands the potential consequences of attacking a NATO member state. “Russia fully understands that attacking a NATO country would be an extremely bad idea,” he said.
At the same time, the prime minister noted that Sweden is seeing “many signs” of hybrid threats and various forms of hostile activity. He also called on European countries to strengthen support for Ukraine, particularly in the field of air defence.
Sweden’s parliamentary defence commission previously warned that Russia could take action against a NATO country if Moscow considered political conditions favourable. Swedish Armed Forces Commander Mikael Claesson has also raised the possibility of an attempt to test NATO’s Article 5 collective defence commitment.
Russian authorities reject such assessments. President Vladimir Putin has described claims about a possible attack on NATO as a provocation aimed at justifying increased defence spending by European countries.
Amid the continuing debate, European states are strengthening defence planning while paying greater attention to cyber threats, sabotage and other forms of hybrid confrontation.
