On Friday, the rebels advanced further south, coming closer to Homs and the capital, Damascus. According to rebel groups and war observers, this aggressive offensive was carried out successfully.

Government forces are taking urgent measures to halt the rapid advance, as it is seen as one of the greatest threats to President Bashar al-Assad’s long-standing control over the country. They have built earthen barriers and launched airstrikes on key highways leading toward Homs.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, forces loyal to Assad have been redeployed from other regions to reinforce key government strongholds, including Damascus and Homs.
