Taftish.uz Staff Detained in Tashkent

On January 16, the head and staff of Taftish.uz, a media outlet known for citizen-driven investigations, were detained in Tashkent. Among those detained are the head, Gayrat Aberaev (1988), and journalists Azizjon Yuldashev (1992), Sardor Hamidov (2000), Marjona Eshkuvvatova (2006), and Dilshod Nishonov (1998).

According to the Tashkent Main Department of Internal Affairs, the journalists are suspected of extortion (Article 165 of the Criminal Code) and fraud (Article 168). Authorities are also checking their possible involvement in defamation (Article 139) and dissemination of false information (Article 244−6). Additional information will be provided later. Reports of the outlet’s closure were denied.

Taftish.uz’s head Gayrat Aberaev was previously involved in a criminal case in November 2023 on charges of fraud and attempted bribery. The outlet is owned by Elita-Media, registered in September 2019, while the website Taftish.uz was registered as a media outlet on March 24, 2021.

On social media, the outlet has 272,000 subscribers on YouTube, 234,000 on Instagram, and 33,400 on Telegram. The latest publications on the website were released on January 13.
