Trump Raises Possibility of New Summit with Putin After Meeting Zelenskyy

US President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of another summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He made the remarks on September 22 in New York before talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly.
Asked whether Putin would agree to meet at the G20 summit in Miami, Trump referred to his previous talks with the Russian leader in Alaska. He said Putin was ready for another meeting and wanted the fighting to end, while expressing uncertainty about a summit specifically in Miami.
Trump also said that both Putin and Zelenskyy wanted the conflict to end. Asked whether Ukraine could regain all its territory, he said the sides would make a deal but declined to disclose its terms.
Trump said he would discuss Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory with Zelenskyy. He said the attacks had caused significant damage to Russia while also affecting diesel fuel prices. Trump had previously urged Zelenskyy to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries. Kyiv has said it would stop such strikes if Moscow halted attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
The two presidents were also expected to discuss the possible production of missiles for Patriot air defense systems in Ukraine. Trump said such a possibility existed.
At the start of the meeting, Zelenskyy expressed hope that the conflict could end before winter and said he was counting on Trump’s help.
The portion of the meeting open to the press lasted several minutes before the talks continued behind closed doors.
