Trump Says Republicans’ Defeat Could Lead to Another Impeachment Attempt
World
US President Donald Trump said Democrats could initiate impeachment proceedings if Republicans lose ground in the November midterm elections for Congress. He made the remarks at a rally in Oklahoma, where he urged voters to support Republican candidates.
Trump said maintaining Republican control of Congress was necessary, among other reasons, to avoid another impeachment effort. He also argued that his supporters are less active at the polls when his name is not on the ballot.
The US midterm elections will be held on November 3, 2026. Voters will elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and roughly one-third of the Senate.
Trump has already faced impeachment twice. He is the first and so far only US president against whom the House of Representatives has initiated impeachment proceedings twice. In both cases, the Senate did not vote to remove him from office.
In September, the Associated Press reported that Democrats were preparing a broad oversight and investigation agenda targeting the Trump administration if they take control of the House. According to the agency, impeachment of the president and individual members of his administration remains among the options under consideration, alongside congressional investigations and oversight.
As the elections approach, Trump is conducting an active campaign on behalf of Republican candidates. At the beginning of October, he launched a series of trips across the country ahead of the November 3 vote.
A possible change in party control of Congress after the November elections would therefore affect the political relationship between the White House and the legislative branch.
