Turkey Moves to Ban Social Media for Children Under 15
World
Turkey is planning to introduce restrictions on the use of social media and online gaming platforms for citizens under the age of 15. The announcement was made by Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Ozdemir Goktas during a national television broadcast.
Under the proposal, access to social media platforms will require entering a national ID number with mandatory age verification. The move aims to strengthen state oversight of minors’ digital activity.
The minister said the measure is intended to protect children from the negative effects of the digital environment. Excessive time spent online, she noted, contributes to addiction, lower academic performance, and increased stress levels among teenagers.
The new rules are expected to come into force at the end of January 2026.
