Two Blasts During Macron’s Visit: What Happened in Damascus

Two explosions struck near the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus, where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during his visit to Syria. Eighteen people, including four police officers, were injured.
According to Reuters, the French president had already left the hotel when the blasts occurred and was safe. His motorcade had travelled to the presidential palace, where Macron met Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Syrian authorities said the explosions were caused by two explosive devices. One was placed in a rubbish bin and the other in a parked vehicle. No deaths were reported, and an investigation is under way.
Macron arrived in Syria the previous day. He became the first leader of a major European Union country to visit Damascus since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in 2024.
Despite the incident, the French president’s visit is continuing.
