Ukraine Wants Immediate NATO Membership

Volodymyr Zelensky told Ukrainian diplomats that they must work to persuade the country’s allies to support NATO membership. He described this goal as “achievable” thanks to security guarantees and the need for protection from Russia.

Ukraine Wants Immediate NATO Membership
Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to bring more “destruction” to Ukraine following drone attacks on the Russian city of Kazan in the central region. Putin met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during a rare visit by an EU and NATO leader.

Kyiv has stated that membership in the transatlantic military alliance or equivalent security guarantees is critical for any peace plan to ensure Russia does not attack again.

NATO has said that Ukraine will join someday, but no timeline for the membership offer has been disclosed.

“We all understand that Ukraine’s invitation to NATO and its membership in the alliance can only be a political decision,” Zelensky said on Sunday during a meeting with diplomats in Kyiv. “And only if we fight for this decision at all necessary levels will we achieve the goal,” he added.

The Ukrainian president previously suggested that NATO membership could be proposed for the unoccupied parts of Ukraine to end the “hot phase” of the war. Last week, after 24 hours of meetings with NATO and EU leaders in Brussels, Zelensky stated that Europe had promised to defend Ukraine.
