US and China Discuss Reciprocal Visits to Nuclear Sites
World
The Trump administration has discussed the possibility of reciprocal visits to nuclear sites with China and plans to continue pursuing such an arrangement during in-person meetings in the coming months. CNN reported this, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
The talks remain informal and preliminary. According to CNN, the idea of reciprocal visits was first raised by the Chinese side during meetings with US officials earlier this year.
The discussions have included potential visits to US Department of Energy national laboratories and corresponding facilities in China. Washington would also be open to considering arrangements for reciprocal visits to nuclear test sites. According to CNN, the discussions have taken place on the sidelines of diplomatic gatherings rather than through formal negotiations.
The United States views such contacts as a possible confidence-building measure that could eventually help create conditions for a broader agreement. For now, however, the discussions do not involve an agreement to limit the development of nuclear arsenals.
The talks come amid growing US concerns over the rapid expansion of China’s nuclear programme. According to CNN, the United States has around 5,000 nuclear warheads, compared with about 600 in China. Beijing is continuing to expand its capabilities and is expected to produce hundreds more warheads over the next decade.
The United States has also previously sought a trilateral nuclear arms control agreement involving Russia and China, but no tangible progress has been made so far. The last remaining arms control agreement between the United States and Russia expired last year.
