US and Denmark Agree on New Greenland Security Framework

The United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement to expand the US military presence on the island while keeping Greenland within the Kingdom of Denmark. US President Donald Trump said Washington would have permanent control over Greenland’s security.
Trump said the United States would immediately begin expanding its military presence in Greenland. The agreement also bars non-NATO countries from establishing military bases on the island and introduces restrictions on certain strategic investments. However, it does not transfer sovereignty over Greenland to the United States.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the arrangement would secure Washington’s long-term security interests in the Arctic. The full text of the agreement has not yet been made public, while details on the scope of the expanded US military presence remain undisclosed.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement is expected to be signed during the upcoming week of the UN General Assembly. It will then have to go through the necessary parliamentary procedures. Copenhagen has stressed that the deal recognises Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.
The agreement therefore expands the US role in Greenland’s security while leaving the island under Danish sovereignty.
