US Labels Cuba a National Security Threat
World
US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency, citing the policies and actions of the Cuban government. According to a statement published on the White House website, Havana poses an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
Trump stated that Cuba supports a number of states and organizations considered hostile by Washington, including Russia, China, the Iranian authorities, as well as the Palestinian group Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The White House also claims that Cuban authorities continue to obstruct US efforts to counter threats posed by hostile states, transnational terrorist groups and other malicious actors, including in the Western Hemisphere.
In addition, Trump said that once the order takes effect, the United States may impose additional ad valorem tariffs on goods imported from countries that directly or indirectly sell or supply oil to Cuba.
Earlier media reports indicated that the Trump administration is also considering tougher measures, including the possibility of a naval blockade aimed at cutting off oil imports to the island.
