Tashkent Hosts Second National Conference on the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor

Uzbekistan and the European Union discussed the development of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor (TCTC), infrastructure investment and reforms aimed at improving the route’s efficiency. The second National TCTC Conference in Uzbekistan opened in Tashkent on September 30, bringing together government representatives, international financial institutions, development partners and the private transport and logistics sector.
Uzbekistan’s Minister of Transport Ilkhom Mahkamov and Peteris Ustubs, Director for Asia and the Pacific at the European Commission, discussed transport cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EU. The talks focused on advancing key investments and reforms along the route and developing more reliable, long-term trade links.
The conference is addressing the development of the Trans-Caspian corridor, investment and project financing, as well as reforms that could strengthen Uzbekistan’s role in sustainable connectivity between Central Asia and Europe. Priorities include railway and road infrastructure, logistics networks, digitalisation of transport and trade documents, streamlined border procedures and greater private-sector participation.
Mahkamov stressed the importance of expanding cooperation with the EU and international financial institutions. He said sustainable development of the corridor requires integrating railways and roads into a single system supported by modern logistics infrastructure.
Uzbekistan is developing a network of logistics centres and warehouses and implementing projects to establish a national terminal at Georgian ports. Together with Azerbaijani partners, it is also working to increase freight capacity in the Caspian Sea, including through the acquisition of new cargo vessels and an increase in the number of services.
“A modern transport corridor is not only about quality roads. Above all, it is about prompt decision-making and a barrier-free environment,” Mahkamov said.
The minister also highlighted the importance of digitalising transport and customs procedures, strengthening regional integration, drawing on international experience and expanding cooperation with the private sector. A 70% discount on rail transportation under the CASCA+ multimodal route is creating additional opportunities for freight operators and businesses.
The conference is being held within the TCTC Coordination Platform with EU support. Its outcomes will contribute to further work on priority investments and measures aimed at improving the corridor’s efficiency and competitiveness.
