Uzbekistan and Germany are seeking to deepen interparliamentary ties, expand trade and economic cooperation, and strengthen engagement in the social sector. These priorities were discussed in Berlin during meetings between an Uzbek parliamentary delegation led by Sodiq Safoyev, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, and German lawmakers, including Bundestag Vice-President Josephine Ortleb.

As part of the visit, the Uzbek delegation met representatives of the Bundestag’s Germany–Central Asia parliamentary cooperation group. Discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries, developing parliamentary relations and broadening trade and economic cooperation.

German parliamentarians highlighted Uzbekistan’s growing economic potential, rising investment and the expanding presence of German companies in the country. They also noted the dynamic growth in tourist exchanges between the two states.

The sides paid particular attention to cooperation on climate change, water resource management, education and the training of skilled professionals. They also stressed the importance of intensifying dialogue within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

Following the discussions, the sides planned to develop a roadmap for interparliamentary cooperation for 2027–2028. They also intend to organise a visit to Uzbekistan by a Bundestag delegation next year. The programme is expected to include an opportunity for German lawmakers to learn about the environmental situation in the Aral Sea region.

At a separate meeting between Safoyev and Ortleb, the participants discussed economic cooperation between regions, exchanges of experience in the social sector and the role of parliamentary diplomacy. Ortleb noted the steady development of relations between Uzbekistan and Germany and emphasised the importance of parliamentary engagement in strengthening political dialogue and addressing international challenges.

The discussions also covered gender equality, expanding opportunities for women and increasing their participation in public administration and social governance. In healthcare, the sides considered ways to improve the quality and accessibility of medical services, study advanced practices and implement joint initiatives.

The meetings concluded with a shared interest in establishing more direct contacts between relevant parliamentary committees and expanding practical cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
