Uzbekistan Announces First Team for World Chess Olympiad

Uzbekistan has finalized its first team for the Open section of the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand. The squad features grandmasters Javokhir Sindarov, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Nodirbek Yakubboev, Shamsiddin Vokhidov and Mukhiddin Madaminov, with Rustam Kasimdzhanov appointed as head coach and team captain.
The players have ratings of 2778, 2762, 2685, 2654 and 2611 respectively. The lineup largely mirrors the Uzbek team that won gold at the 2022 Olympiad in Chennai. The only change is the inclusion of young grandmaster Mukhiddin Madaminov in place of Jahongir Vakhidov.
In the first round of the Open section, Uzbekistan’s main team will face Jamaica. Uzbekistan-2 will play Afghanistan, while Uzbekistan-3 will meet Mali. The pairings have been confirmed by the tournament’s official draw system.
Uzbekistan’s women’s first team will face Trinidad and Tobago in the opening round. Uzbekistan-2 will play Togo, while Uzbekistan-3 will meet Tanzania. The country is therefore starting the Olympiad with six teams — three in the Open section and three in the Women’s event.
According to the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the 46th World Chess Olympiad is being held in Samarkand from September 15 to 27, with the first round beginning on September 16. The Open section features 208 teams and the Women’s section 192, bringing the total to 400 teams — a record for the Chess Olympiad.
Ahead of the competition, FIDE held a press conference featuring federation officials and members of the Uzbek team, including Nodirbek Abdusattorov. The participants discussed the development of chess in Uzbekistan, preparations for the Olympiad and the objectives of the national teams.
The Olympiad is being played over 11 rounds under the Swiss system. The event has brought together leading chess players from around the world and set a new participation record by number of teams.
