Uzbekistan Presents Integrated Nuclear Power Plant Model in London

Uzbekistan has presented its approach to nuclear energy development to the international nuclear community. At the 51st World Nuclear Symposium of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) in London, the country showcased an integrated nuclear power plant model combining high-capacity VVER-1000 power units with small modular RITM-200N reactors.
The presentation was delivered during the “New Pathways to Nuclear Energy” session as part of a working visit by an Uzatom delegation on September 10–11. The project is being implemented as part of reforms aimed at strengthening Uzbekistan’s energy security.
Participants positively assessed Uzbekistan’s systematic approach to developing the sector, including institution-building, long-term planning, the creation of a regulatory and infrastructure framework, and the involvement of international expertise. Lassina Zerbo, Adviser to the President of Rwanda and Chairman of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Council, described Uzbekistan’s experience as relevant for developing countries and highlighted Uzatom’s role as the sector’s single coordinator.
The symposium also provided an opportunity for bilateral talks with international partners. Discussions with France’s Orano focused on cooperation in the nuclear fuel cycle and the management of spent nuclear fuel. The sides agreed to continue consultations and arrange a visit by Uzbek specialists to relevant facilities in France.
Meetings with the leadership of the WNA and the World Nuclear University covered Uzbekistan’s prospects for full membership in the association, regional cooperation in Central Asia and educational programmes. Uzbekistan was also included among candidates to host university events.
Talks with AtkinsRéalis focused on CANDU reactor technology and the feasibility of applying it in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan and Rwanda also confirmed their interest in exchanging expertise and holding joint familiarization programmes.
The symposium therefore served not only as a platform for presenting Uzbekistan’s nuclear energy programme, but also for developing practical cooperation in technology, the nuclear fuel cycle, education and international exchange of expertise.
